Katy Brazier started working at Shut the Front Door just a couple of days a week, but has now been managing the store for the past 18 months. She fell in love with the store, the product, working in town and being in the city - so we had a chat with her about her favourite parts:
Shut the Front Door has four stores in Auckland, one in Wellington, and only one in the South Island - and the High Street shop in Christchurch is quite proud of that. It’s a gift store (with a lot of furniture as well) boasting a huge range of Christmas gifts - catering for babies through to the elderly, male, female, the eco-warrior in your life, and everyone in between.

We had a chat with Katy about the CBD that she loves:
Where do you go to eat and drink?
Our family goes out for dinner every Thursday night to a new restaurant in the CBD, and I like to go out for drinks with friends on a Friday. We go to O.G.B. for a wine and the chips (but love their soup too!)
I love going anywhere down The Strip (The Terrace) and lately hanging out at the Riverside Market, trying everything and finding different things.
We take out-of-towners to Twenty Seven Steps in New Regent St when they come to visit, and my kids love Little High - one of them gets a pizza and and the other is really in to burgers, so many options!
Where would you shop for treats for yourself?
Decjuba is my favourite, and I love Plume.
Any secret spots you can share?
I take my lunch to Huanui Lane which is parallel to Manchester St, and sit in Rauora Park for a spot of people watching - it’s nice and relaxing and the people that use the space are quite youthful, which is refreshing.
Favourite Christmas Movie?
Any Christmas traditions?
We make the children get up every Christmas morning and go to church. It’s just something I had to do when I was young, so we’re very traditional in that sense. We always have a big family lunch, and my favourite part is dessert - love a good trifle!
Worst Christmas Present you’ve received?
I got an exercycle from my husband - I wasn’t happy with that! Apparently I’d commented on one six months earlier, but I definitely didn’t ask for one.
What are you looking forward to this Summer?
Catching up with family and friends! We had our work do early December which was lots of fun - we went to Dux Central and had a beautiful meal, it was a great night. Love enjoying the sunshine and embracing the stressfulness and the funness of the chaos at this time of year! It’s all part of it.
How do you get around?
Before I had my own car park, I would park in a free spot on Fitzgerald Ave and walk. It would take me 8 minutes and it was so relaxing, especially at the end of the day - a great way to unwind. A wee walk doesn’t hurt! It’s so good for the soul.
What is your Christmas wish for Christchurch Central?
I wish for everyone to be happy and have a roof over their heads, and to be well fed for Christmas. And hopefully, they can be with family!
